Timothy Whitaker’s Memory of Bill Gustin
My name is Tim Whitaker.
I was in class 77. During
the academy we all heard
stories about the legend
Captain Bill Gustin!
My 昀椀rst shift out I was sent to station 35. The lieutenant (Todd Garofalo) told me to put my gear on the
truck and that we’re going to station 2, to drill. An
hour later I was carrying Captain Gustin out of a second story window down a 24 foot ladder. I kept saying
to myself, “Oh my God, I’m going to drop Bill Gustin on
my 昀椀rst shift!” Obviously I didn’t. What a 昀椀rst shift!
