those stairs over and over again at a time in
full gear when one would’ve been enough. If
that 昀椀re昀椀ghter was quietly struggling…then
the strongest 昀椀re any of us may face might
not be one we can see.
So here’s the 昀椀nal drill—and
it’s for all of us:
Check on your brothers and sisters. Ask real
questions. Answer honestly when someone asks you. Make mental and emotional
昀椀tness part of your routine the way Gustin
made physical readiness his religion. Because that’s the drill now. And it needs to become our daily gospel. But not every lesson
Bill left behind is so clear. This one—we’re

so deep, he gave every
part of himself to it.
Even as he aged, his
spark never dimmed.
We’re standing at a scene none of us fully understand. It doesn’t 昀椀t our training. It
doesn’t follow the rules we know. But we
do know this: Bill Gustin is gone. And now,
it’s on us—those he trained, those he inspired—to 昀椀gure out what this means… and
how to lead from here.
And we’ll 昀椀gure it out. We always do because its who we are.
Because that’s the drill now.
And it needs to become our daily gospel.
My only bid as a
Fire昀椀ghter was
Rescue 7. I realized
Bill’s intensity didn’t
come from ego. It came
from LOVE. For the
culture. For the job.
