Station Etiquette
Captains $20, and Chief Fire Of昀椀cers should buy dinner for the
entire crew, if not the station.
PERSONAL TIME:
If you are not busy running calls after completion of station
assignments, use your time wisely. Complete the assigned
modules in your workbook, read articles from the Fire or Rescue
magazines or Jumpline Magazine supplied in each station, or
recheck the equipment on the apparatus. Someone’s life may
depend upon it.
Cell phones should be used for emergencies only. There is no
other reason for you to use one while on the apparatus or on a
call. You can tell your family and friends about your day or an
exciting call when you get off duty. Cell phones should be put
in silence or vibration mode at the beginning of the shift. It’s
inappropriate and annoying for one to start beeping or ringing
while you’re on a call.
INTERACTION WITH THE PUBLIC:
Do not perform personal errands on-duty unless necessary.
Everyone has a cell phone camera and is looking to 昀椀nd fault
with what you do and document it.
Do not go into, park in front of, or give the perception that you
are even interested in the contents of a gun, liquor, or cigar
store. Remember, perception is the new reality.
Do not high-昀椀ve, hug, or shake hands with any other department
members on a call, regardless of how long it’s been since
you’ve seen them. Remember bullets one and two, cameras
and perception.
Members of the public will rarely approach you with a complaint:
they will go directly to the Mayor, Commissioner, Council, or
Fire Chief. Right or wrong, you still must justify your actions.
When in public, look professional, act professional, think
professional, and be professional. Fire昀椀ghters are no longer the
good guys; many think you are overpaid and under-worked.
A person’s 昀椀rst impression of you is a lasting one.
Your reputation, good or bad will precede you to
every station in the county.
