In today’s article, as always, here are
a few tidbits and scraps of information
for your consumption:
Paychecks: Our members continue to experience several paycheck
issues. It is critical that you review each
and every paycheck and look for discrepancies, errors, omissions or outliers. If you discover something that doesn’t look
right, please contact me, John Kelly, or your payroll technician,
so that it can be investigated and explained.
Cost of Living Allowance (COLA): The 昀椀nal
COLA raise for the 2023 – 2026 CBA was effective the 昀椀rst pay
period in April of 2026 and should have paid in your April 17,
2026, paycheck. All Bargaining Unit members will receive a 4%
COLA raise. The 4% COLA is applied to your current pay step
in the County Pay Plan and is negotiated in Article 44 of the
Collective Bargaining Agreement. Please do not confuse the
Miami-Dade COLA with the FRS Retirement COLA which is provided to members once he/she retires by the Florida Retirement
System.
It has been a few years since we last had a quorum at a membership meeting. It requires 45 members for a quorum. If we
have a quorum, the body of the membership can make motions
to provide the leadership with direction on issues and matters
pertaining to the Local. The meetings also provide the opportunity to ask the Principal Of昀椀cers any questions about current
affairs, the department, negotiations, rumors, future events, issues, etc. This is your monthly opportunity to address gripes,
concerns, and complaints with the leadership of this Union.
Our Constitution and Bylaws require the meetings to be held.
I would encourage everyone to attend at least one membership
meeting a year if not more.
Member Dues Increase: Effective April 17, 2026,
your L-1403 membership dues increased from $51.12 to $52.55
per paycheck. This dues increase is a result of the 4% COLA
that went into effect the 昀椀rst pay period in April 2026. The increase is in accordance with our Constitution and Bylaws which
states: “Dues shall equal one (1) percent of the salary “10” (maximum) step of the basic Fire Fighter classi昀椀cation.”

General Membership Meetings: Membership
meetings are held on the last Tuesday of the month at 12pm.
There is no meeting held in the month of December. The meeting schedule is always posted on the Local’s website, www.local1403.org. Here is the meeting schedule for the remainder of
2026:
