昀椀re昀椀ghters, which is why there is physical
screening and medical exams. Progressively though, 昀椀re service management
is seeing the devastating effects of years of
horror that 昀椀re昀椀ghters see and blood on their
hands, which way too often leads them down a
path of self and mental destruction. PTSD is an
enemy to 昀椀re昀椀ghters like cancer. It grows over time
and must be treated. Fire昀椀ghters live every day, and
every day should be the best day; treatment helps
reach that goal.
There are so many unsung heroes in the 昀椀re
service. But another one who stands out due
to the time she devotes to a variety of causes
and charities is Lt. Jeanette Harrington. She
was hired in 2002, class 91. In the beginning she spent time at
stations 34, 50, and 11, before going to NFIRS, now she is the
media relations liaison. For over ten years she has been raising
money for Fight For Air Climb, over $100k raised. Other involvements are MDA Boot Drive, Autism Ride, Dolphin Cancer Ride,

Growing For Inclusion, American Lung Association,
Miami Country Day School Walk With A Purpose,
Latina Style Heroes Institute, BrotHERhood Ride,
United Way softball, Juneteenth Kickball Tournament,
and other organizations helping the disabled, visually impaired, prosthetics, and others. Her desire is
to help people go beyond their disabilities. She has
worked behind the scenes at events, also designing
t-shirts, coins, and the Autism Engine, which goes to
various events, she has handed out food and drinks
at many events. She has herself participated in running events like half marathons to raise funds. She
encourages individuals with disabilities to get involved in events
themselves.
There are a few things a person can never get back in this
world: the spoken word and time are two of those. Both should
be used cautiously. Alex and Jeanette have used
their time well, lots of their time, giving it in
various endeavors and activities intended to
bene昀椀t others. It is a sel昀氀ess and noble thing
they do.
