3. The Buffett Philosophy

visors, that looks like fertile ground.
Warren Buffett, one of the most successful investors in history,
has a famously simple outlook on investing. He’s repeatedly said
that most people should skip high-fee managers altogether and
instead invest in a low-cost S&P 500 index fund.
“When trillions of dollars are managed by Wall Streeters
charging high fees, it will usually be the managers who reap outsized pro昀椀ts, not the clients.” — Warren Buffett, 2016 Berkshire
Hathaway Shareholder Letter
Buffett understands something that most investors overlook:
fees compound negatively. Every dollar lost to fees today is a
dollar that can’t grow tomorrow.
Buffett’s advice to the average investor is brutally honest: Buy
broad market index funds, avoid unnecessary fees, and let compounding do its work.
That philosophy aligns perfectly with the disciplined mindset
昀椀re昀椀ghters already live by: steady, repeatable action under pressure. What you should consider is what fees the managed money 昀椀rm charges for their services and determine if that strategy
is bene昀椀cial for you.
4. How Fire昀椀ghters Are Targeted
Fire昀椀ghters represent a trusted, tight-knit community with
predictable income, strong pensions, and substantial deferred
compensation balances (like the 457(b) or DROP). To many ad-
So they attend union meetings, sponsor charity golf tournaments, and hand out free dinners claiming to “specialize” in
working with 昀椀re昀椀ghters. The pitch often sounds like this:
“You’ve worked hard protecting the public. Let us protect your
money.”
I’ve often heard familiar phrases used to promote 昀椀nancial
products even some I personally 昀椀nd valuable when used appropriately. The key is to stay informed and ask thoughtful questions
about any product or strategy presented to you. Fire昀椀ghters, by
nature, place great importance on loyalty and personal relationships, and that trust is well-earned through years of shared experience and integrity.
Still, even after trust is established, I encourage you to stay engaged and curious. Review the details, understand how a product works, and make sure it aligns with your goals and comfort
level. True 昀椀nancial con昀椀dence doesn’t come from blind trust. It
comes from “informed” trust.
This isn’t to suggest that every advisor who understands the
昀椀re昀椀ghter world lacks integrity; far from it. Many dedicated professionals genuinely care about helping 昀椀rst responders achieve
their 昀椀nancial goals. Still, priorities can differ from one advisor to
another. Some may emphasize gathering assets under management (AUM), while others focus more on client education and
empowerment. You should understand your options clearly and
“Mark understands firefighters — not just
financially, but personally.” “I’ve worked with other
Financial Professionals before, but none who really got
the culture, schedule, and retirement system like Mark
does. He helped me see the bigger picture and plan with
confidence for life after the job. Highly recommend him
to any firefighter looking to build a solid financial future.”
— Pat L., Captain, MDFR
“Straightforward, honest guidance every step
of the way.” “Working with Mark has been like talking
to a senior brother at the station. No sales pitch, no
pressure — just real advice and options laid out clearly.
I feel much more in control of my retirement plan thanks
to his help.”
— Antonio F., Firefighter-Paramedic, MDFR

“I trust Mark because he’s lived the same life
we have.” “He wore the gear, worked the shifts, and
understands DROP, pensions, and what it’s like to
transition out of the fire service. I feel like he’s looking
out for our best interests and helping us protect what
we’ve worked so hard for.”
— Lennox F., Captain, MDFR
My Guide to
Wealth Protection
For Warriors
“Mark helped me make sense of my entire
retirement picture.” “Between DROP, my 457, and
my pension options, I felt like I was juggling too many
moving parts. Mark mapped everything out clearly and
helped me see how each decision impacts the next 10–
20 years. What I appreciate most is that he respected
my timeline — no pressure, just solid guidance from
someone who’s walked the same path we have in the
fire service.”
