The First Responders Resiliency Foundation is accessed via a hotline number (786) 551-4911.
It’s staffed by a clinician, who understands our issues. Based on the issue, you will be afforded the
opportunity to meet with a therapist for ten sessions. It is completely anonymous and free. If your
issue is such that the ten sessions are not enough, you are transitioned to a therapist provided
through your insurance. The intent is to empty your emotional cup as soon as it begins to 昀椀ll.
Both labor and management need to have a sit-down session to de昀椀ne their respective
roles related to mental health. There seems to be duplication of effort, yet we still have
a growing crisis. How do we handle the active member whose cup is becoming 昀椀lled, or
the retiree who has no reentry plan? The clock is ticking. Let us not have another loss
simply because we have put no effort towards 昀椀nding the solution.
For those with families, cherish the birthdays and gatherings with your family. For
those retiring, use the time in the DROP to prepare for the next chapter. Whether it’s
taking a course or picking up a hobby. You want to do it now while you are working, and
the opportunities are before you.
As for Bill, he is staf昀椀ng one of the rigs in the “Big House.” He is
with the many legends that have gone before us. What makes Bill
different is that he is a 昀椀re service icon. As such he gets to ride
whatever seat he wants. Perhaps when the Blackhearts pray for the
job, they will pray to Bill, and he will answer their call. As the saying
goes, “it’s not goodbye, but until we meet again.” When that happens
maybe I will have the opportunity to be on his tailboard.
